I've been a message board junkie for about 10 years now. As much as I can appreciate Blogs and Wikis, forums are really my bag. Hobbyist forums in particular are my favorites. I collect records and am into the audiophile hobby, so I visit many forums related to those subjects. Over the years I have been a superuser on different hobbyist forums related to motorcycles, books, art, and more.
To me, the idea that there are unrecognized and unassuming experts on various subjects is fascinating. From a cultural standpoint, I think these kinds of experts are going to radically change how we learn about subjects. Between a youtube video, ebay, and a message board you could learn how to put together a Cadillac in your basement over the course of a winter. Wow. Think about that.
Also, I have run my own private community for 6+ years and continue to learn and shape most of my best practices by being in the trenches.
