WuBookCover2.jpg Last Thursday, Lithium hosted a small dinner party to preview the new book “The Science of Social” with a few big thinkers in the industry. I’m very honored to meet so many people whom I respect so much all at once. I only regret that I didn’t have more time to talk to everyone who was there.

I had the opportunity to say a few words of thanks at the dinner. However, I didn’t have much time, both to prepare and to say everything that I wanted to say. With the weekend to reflect upon the past week, and a little more time to recollect the words in my mind, I decided to share these thanks with all of you.

A Few Words of Thanks at the Big Thinker’s Dinner

Good Evening Big Thinkers,

Thank you for coming to this small dinner party. Asides from taking the time to join us here tonight, I must also thank every one of you for something else. That is because I’ve learned so much from all of you. Whether it is reading articles you wrote, talking over the phone, chatting at conferences, or all the other forms of collaborations. I really have learnt a great deal from you all.

You see, unlike most of you here, I’ve only been in the social media industry for 3 and half years. I joined Lithium in July 2008, straight out of the Biophysics PhD program at UC Berkeley, where I was using machine learning and statistics to model how the human brain processes visual information.

I knew nothing about social, and I was completely off the grid in terms of social media. I had no idea what Twitter was and I didn’t even know what CRM stands for. I thought it meant some Crazy Ridiculous Management system.

It is through all the great work that you produce that I was able to pick up this subject so quickly. All I did is provide a different perspective, and maybe, add a little scientific rigor to this complex subject.

I also wanted to thank Lithium for giving me the opportunity to do “real science.” After getting my PhD from UC Berkeley, I interviewed at quite a few places that offers me the “scientist” title and claim to have research departments. But when I talk to their scientists, I found the work they do is really an engineer’s work. I consider myself lucky to find Lithium, and I am truly fortunate to find a company that values real science and provides me the resources to pursue it.

This book is actually the fruit of collaboration between many extremely talented individuals at Lithium. I have a guilty conscience to be the one taking most of the credit here. But it really is a team work; everything from the editing, the graphics, the page layout, to the final printing of this book. In this highly interdependent world, we must learn to recognize that nothing is ever just one person’s doing.

Finally, I must thank my wife, Margie. You heard the adage that behind every successful man there is a successful woman. I would say that behind every scientist’s there is a very patient, loving, and tolerant women. That is, if there is a women at all. It’s not easy to be a scientist’s wife. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Margie about all the things she had to go through to put up a “scientific” argument with me.

So thank you for all your support and recognition. Without your validation, I wouldn’t be here. Isaac Newton once wrote, in a letter to Robert Hooke, “If I have seen further, it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants...”

Today, you are my giants! Everyone of you. That includes those from Lithium who helped me along the way, and of course Margie, who has always provided me with unconditional support. If I’ve seen further, it’s only because of all of you. Thank you big thinkers, thank you Lithium, and thank you Margie.

SoS Big Thinker Dinner

Conclusion

I am very fortunate to have the support of so many giants in my life. "The science of social" is a book based on my work. In a way, you can think of it as a compilation and a reorganization of my blog posts that have been published here over the years. In addition, the book includes many new data points and case studies that put the theories in context and into a more cohesive story.

It is not officially released yet. Lithium will be making some public announcement about this book very soon – stay tuned for more details.

Sorry for this little digression from big data analytics. I felt compel to share this more emotional (less analytical) side of my mind with you all. We will return to the subject of data reduction through analytics before you know it.

Hello Maria,

Thank you for stopping by and thank you for such kind words.

Like I said, I owe it to you all for teaching me so much about social, all I did was added the math and science. Scientist and mathematicians are usually not the most "social" people after all.  :-)

I would love to hear your thoughts on the book when you get the chance poke holes in it.

We should get tea again. I look forward to more discussion around social analytics as that will be a focus on my research agenda this year.

Hope to see you again next time.

Congratulations Michael! I've started following your work and thoughts on twitter lately and you've never disappointed. I'm very eager to get a hold of your book as social analytics is one my personal goals too for this year.

I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and I hope I can grab some projects this year that will enable me to work deeper with social analytics, follow your principles and ideas and make some mistake of my own so that I may truly learn.

Wishing you continued success ahead!

Best Regards,

Vedha

Michael, don't forget you are now one of the giants yourself!  A very humble giant with your trademark cap, but one nevertheless.  Just knowing who you are and the rigor and passion you apply to your work, I am dead certain your book will be a great success.

Thank you so much Michael for all your pioneering work, thank you Lithium for giving Michael space, letting him do what he does best.  And I have to throw a thanks as well to the other giants (lots of "star power" in that picture!), they help many of us to learn and expand our horizons in this wild and crazy "social" world!

Congrats Michael.  It was a real pleasure to meet you and what a fabulous dinner.  In a world of quick answers and fly-by analysis, in-depth research (outside of academia) is rare and much needed.  The social journey has just begun and I sense we need all the guidance we can get as we transform business, culture and economies.  I look forward to following your contributions.

Hi Michael,

Congratulations on your new book. I am really looking forward to reading it.

You are not only one of the smartest person I have met but one of the nicest. Humility in my book is treasured more than many other qualities a person might have. You definitely deserve the credit you get and I am extremely glad our paths crossed.

Best,

Ned

Hello Vedha,

Thank you for the nice comment and your perseverance in following my work. I'm certainly glad to hear that I didn't disappoint you. And I hope I can keep that up.

One clarification is that the “Science of Social” is not meant to be a technical/mathematical book. It is written for the general audience, so you might not get too much of the deep social analytics that you are looking for in it. Just want to set your expectation, so I don’t disappoint you.  ;-)

The best return for a scientist is to see their knowledge being put to good use. So, I’m always happy to share my knowledge and discuss any social analytics related topics here through the comments on my blog. So feel free ask any related questions or discuss ideas with me here.

I look forward to our future discussions. And hope to see you again on Lithosphere.

Hello @briankling,

Thank you for the comment and the kind words.

That trademark look of me: nerdy glasses with kangol style cap is actually my wife’s work. I owe that to her, since I have little to none fashion sense. Now I just follow her formula wherever I go.  ;-)

I’m not sure if I can claim the status as giants yet. But thank you thinking so highly of me. If I really do become a giant someday, I will definitely remember this day, and I’ll be glad to lend my shoulders to those talented individuals who might need something to lean against.

It is a wild ride in the social world. Being a relatively newcomers to the field, it was certainly a blast to me. Looking forward to learn more from my giants and contribute to the advancement of this field.

Thank you again for believing in me. We’ll chat again very soon.

Hello Christine,

Thank you for commenting. It was a real pleasure meeting you at the dinner.

I only wish there were more time at the dinner for us to further discuss the greater societal implications (e.g. political, economical, etc.) of soical software design. It is an interesting topic, but not discussed much, except for maybe Clay Shirky (another person whom I learned a great deal from).

I certainly hope I can continue to share my research to help transform the way brands/enterprises do business. To be honest, I'm not very business savvy, and I will need to learn more on that front.

I look forward to future discussions and even possible collaboration with you.

Hope to see you again on Lithosphere.

Hello Ned,

Haven't seen you for a while. Thank you for the comment and the congrats.

I appreciate your value for humility. As I've always said, "A good scientist MUST learn to be humble. Because the minute he thinks he knows everything, he'll stop learning. And once he stops learning, his knowledge will stop advancing. Then everything is downhill from there."

I'm glad our paths crossed too.

And I hope to see you on Lithosphere more in the near future.

This looks like another great read, Michael—and of course you practice what you preach, publicly thanking the people who helped you get to this point. I look forward to seeing where you (and Lithium) go from here.

Lithium Guru on ‎01-18-2012 05:00 PM

Hello Marshall,

Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

I still remember couple years ago when you first cited my 90-9-1 study of our communities. It's definitely a long way since then, but rathre fun and fulfilling. Thank you for recognizing my work and writing about it. It definitely contributed to getting me to where I am to day.

Where I (and Lithium) go from here is an intereting question. I don't know for sure, but I will follow the data and go where the question and the science leads me.

Thank you for commenting and I hope to see you again next time.

Hello Mark,

Thank you for commenting and for coming to the big thinker's dinner.

It is everyone's presence that made the dinner special. I enjoyed it very much too. It is truly a humbling event for me to see so many big thinkers.

Glad to hear that you are starting to read the book. If you have been following this blog, it shouldn't be completely new, except for some of the case studies and data points. Let me know what you think of it.

Look forward to hear from you. See you next time.

Jerome(anon) on ‎01-23-2012 12:39 PM
So is there a list of exactly who was there? :smileyhappy:
Lithium Guru on ‎01-25-2012 12:57 AM

Hello Jerome,

Thanks for the recent RTs and the question here.

Maybe you can check out this book review by Michael Brito

http://www.britopian.com/2012/01/16/book-review-the-science-of-social-by-dr-michael-wu-from-lithium/

He list most of the attendees who were there early. There were some that came later though.

Hope to see you more often on Lithosphere.
