in our case very little as we didn't use a leaderboard or publish really detailed points.  Mostly because our ambition was much broader than the subset of communities we managed where these sorts of steps would have worked.  Looking at other programs, I would say the following:

1) Some amount of gaming will occur in most cases.  In a small community, it can be more pronounced, but it is also small, so should be easy for you to identify and address directly with gamers.  In a large community it can happen, but as you get big, it is usually more of a nusance than a real issue.  You see it and it's aggrevating, but generally doesn't hurt the community much.  You still have to watch for it and address it as your "real influencers" will see it and if you don't address they will be annoyed with you.

2) Gaming is more likely when your rewards are out of balance with the community.  If your rewards are too valuable, you will attract gamers and collectors.  It may also be a sign that your point model is too simplistic and needs reviewing.

3)  Overall, gaming is no reason not to pursue these sorts of models.  Choose a platfrom with a granular point allocation system and good reporting.  Set terms of use and ensure compliance.  Address violations of terms of use expediently.
