Quick Reply

Status: Under Consideration

One of our members who was visiting from another forum that uses vBulletin asked me why there was no Quick Reply box in Lithium's platform.  I decided to make this a suggestion as I've found that option to be very useful in forums I've visited that have it.

It's simply a feature at the end of a thread that allows a quick response to the thread as a whole without having to open another page.  Simply scroll to the bottom of the thread, key your reply in the box and hit post.  There are minimal editing options available, but it's pretty handy for a truly quick, one or two sentence response that doesn't require quoting or much in the way of editing features.

As I mentioned in my earlier comment, we will get to this very soon. Hang in there...

I'm curious about what kind of problems you've run across that cause you to dislike that kind of feature, Greed - does it block other controls or features?  Most of the implementations that I've seen are very similar to this "Post A Comment" text box here in Ideas, so I'm trying to visualize something different that forum members would dislike.

Who knows... if we're lucky, maybe this will already be a feature in Li 9.0...

You guys are in luck! We are actually going to start working on  "quick reply" very soon. We are thinking more on the lines of posting a comment on Facebook. Its super quick and easy. The idea behind quick reply is while reading a post, you come across something that urges you to post a short and quick response and then continue reading the rest of the thread without losing context and going to another page. Users could also switch to the full reply mode with more editing options (like bold, upload, tagging etc) if they wanted.

We will make sure there is a user preference to set a default because some users may prefer the default behavior to have all the editing options.

That's great news that it's in the pipeline - thanks!  Just providing a carbon copy of this little Post a Comment box here would be perfect.

I'm not sure what this means, though, since I'm not asking for an either / or.  I want both a Quick Reply box AND the full reply mode all the time.    And, yes, I do want to have my cake and eat it, too!  ;-)

i dont like it becuse of the fact that its just another thing to load and its so easy to accedentally post stuff..maybe if its hidden then opened upon request by AJAX or something but i never really liked it.

it makes pages look cluttered witch is something best about lithium is that there products a very clean.

Thanks for explaining, Greed!  Load time is a good reason for Lithium to keep a Quick Reply box simple like the Post a Comment box here in Ideas.  Personally, I'd rather not have it hidden since that kind of defeats the purpose for having a Quick Reply box, but perhaps it could be a user-controlled option?
