As clutter goes, I think it would be great if placeholders (you know...when you move posts) can be set to expire (delete) after a set period of time. I think a week is sufficient time for the OP to come back, discover their post has moved, and go about their business.
This could be either a global setting, or perhaps a per-action setting like "mark placeholder read-only" is today. Perhaps the Admin could set the default expiry time and optionally choose "Placeholder Expires" or "Never Expire" when moving a post.

Potential,
Fantastic idea! I agree that these take up space and lose their value over time, especially as new people will use search or find on the target board where it was moved. Really, in our forum the place holder is just a breadcrumb for the benefit of the OP, and usually it's only need for a couple days or a week.

Excellent idea!
I've considered searching for my old placeholders and deleting them. Sadly, this would be a time-consuing task.
Even some sort of global search and delete feature for placeholders would be great to have.
