New words for the wise

by Lithium Guru on 03-20-2009 06:16 PM

As part of the community platform changes included in the most recent Lithium releases, we've started a process of updating our language and making it more consistent.

For example, what we used to call either Notes or Private Messages are now just Private Messages. Likewise, Icons are now Avatars (the things that really are icons are still icons, though), and Threads are now Topics. We've also updated the names and descriptions of many personal profile settings so that they more closely describe the changes your community members can make.

Look for more changes of this type in the coming months, as we roll out incremental improvements to our words.

Susan,

That's great news - often we focus on the large visible changes, like David's post on the upcoming new UI and other features, but consistency and a common vernacular that make sense to both new admins and those who have been working with communities for a while puts an extra bit of polish on the product.

The consistency in naming will also ensure the user guides match the settings on the admin panels and tie neatly to the reporting functions.   I imagine the challenge of your job - with software as a service, things can be very fluid and fast moving.

<laughing> Mark, fluid doesn't begin to describe it. Think tidal wave. Still, we're paddling as fast as we can to keep up with steady incremental improvements.
